The Willows Recognized Among L.A.’s Best Private Schools

We are proud to share that The Willows Community School has been recognized by The Hollywood Reporter as one of Los Angeles’ Best Private Schools. For The Willows, this recognition reflects our long-standing commitment to a balanced yet demanding progressive education rooted in experiential learning and social values.

One of the key attributes noted by The Hollywood Reporter is our focus on social emotional learning. We have integrated the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence RULER systemic approach to social emotional learning (SEL) throughout our school community. The approach emphasizes recognizing, understanding, labeling, expressing, and regulating emotions, and by intentionally teaching these skills, students develop self-awareness, empathy, and emotional intelligence that support both academic growth and healthy relationships. This approach is woven into daily school life, helping students navigate challenges and celebrate successes with confidence and care.

The strength of The Willows Community was also emphasized. As educational consultant Nambiar shared with The Hollywood Reporter, “The parent body is really strong, and they love their school.” This partnership between families and educators creates a supportive environment where students feel known, valued, and encouraged. When parents, teachers, and staff work together with a shared purpose, the impact on student experience is powerful.

Our curriculum further reflects our commitment to curiosity and creativity. Willows students are encouraged to problem solve, think critically, ask questions, and take intellectual and creative risks. We challenge children to challenge themselves, and recognize that in an ever-evolving world, the ability to adapt and think creatively is imperative.

Students also benefit from unique opportunities such as a Poet-in-Residence, who brings language and storytelling to life across grade levels. Elective offerings that begin in 5th Grade are equally diverse, ranging from 3D printing to survival skills. These experiences allow students to discover new interests, build practical skills, and approach learning with a sense of excitement and possibility.

Being named one of L.A.’s Best Private Schools is an honor that affirms the work and joy happening every day on campus. It celebrates a learning environment where academic rigor, creative exploration, and social emotional growth are thoughtfully balanced. We are grateful to our students, faculty, staff, and families who make The Willows such a vibrant and inspiring place to learn. We cherish our students’ curious minds and embrace every opportunity to help them flourish emotionally and intellectually, now and in the future.

Forecasting Learning: How a New Weather Station Strengthens Science

The Willows community is seeing science come to life, quite literally in the air around us. Thanks to funds raised during last year’s Jog-a-Thon, we have purchased a professional-grade weather station, the Davis Vantage Pro 2. This new device is more than just an exciting gadget, but a learning tool that constantly updates and deepens our integrated science curriculum, empowering students to explore our environment and climate through real data, observation, and discovery.

Celebrating 10 Years of RULER at The Willows

For the past decade, The Willows’ implementation of the RULER Approach has not only transformed how our students learn, but how our entire community understands, expresses, and values emotions. We recognize that emotions matter, and that healthy emotional regulation plays a vital piece in helping to cultivate children’s minds.

Struggle: Helping Children Grow Through Challenge

The Willows school-wide theme for the 2025-2026 school year is Struggle. Each day, we challenge students to uncover meaning and significance in the world around them and emphasize independence and courage in risk-taking. One of the most powerful ways children develop these skills is through something many of us instinctively want to protect them from: struggle.
