Innovate: A Year of Curiosity, Creativity, and Purpose

Innovate: A Year of Curiosity, Creativity, and Purpose

The Willows begins every year with a new school-wide theme—a guiding idea that connects our community through a common thread. The purpose is to re-imagine core curriculum units by integrating the theme into classroom projects, the arts, and athletics. This year’s 2026–2027 school-wide theme is Innovate.

The heart of innovation lies with the willingness to embrace and drive change. Asking questions, challenging assumptions, taking thoughtful risks, and imagining new possibilities are all inherent to an innovative mindset

These are qualities that have long been woven into the fabric of a Willows education.

Throughout the school year, students across every grade level will engage in experiences that encourage them to think critically, collaborate with others, and develop unique solutions to challenges. Whether they are building foundational skills in the Lower School or tackling complex, interdisciplinary projects in Middle School, students will be encouraged to consider challenges as invitations to think differently.

Importantly, innovation is not measured solely by the final product, but by the significance of the process itself. As teachers emphasize Innovate in the classroom, they will impart the persistence to revise an idea, the confidence to share a new perspective, and the empathy to design solutions that uplift the lives of others. By celebrating the journey as much as the outcome, students learn that innovation is all-encompassing and requires more than a novel idea, but the determination and resolve to follow through and bring their ideas to life.

Preparing students for the future means equipping them for a world that is constantly changing. Many of the careers today's children will pursue have not even been imagined, and many of tomorrow's greatest challenges will require solutions that do not yet exist. While core knowledge remains essential, the ability to adapt, collaborate, and think creatively is just as vital. That is why innovation matters.

As our community embraces this year's school-wide theme, we look forward to seeing students approach learning with fresh perspectives, bold ideas, and an eagerness to explore the unknown. Through curiosity, imagination, and thoughtful action, they will discover that innovation isn't reserved for a select few—it's a way of thinking that empowers every learner to make a difference. Together, we innovate.

Athletics isn’t just about earning trophies, scoring goals, winning games, or receiving accolades. The greatest reward is something much bigger that can’t be found on the scoreboard or in the stat sheet. It’s found within a child.

The ultimate award? Confidence.

Preparing Students for the Future Through Creativity

Predicting what the future holds for our children is a task without end. With new technologies developing at unforeseen rates and global challenges lacking solutions, questions continue to arise about how to prepare the next generations to innovate and lead. While it can be easy to find comfort in familiar traditions, solving unique problems requires creative solutions. This means viewing obstacles not as handicaps, but as opportunities to persevere.

Guiding Growth: Teacher Mentoring

At The Willows, learning is a lifelong journey that extends beyond our classrooms and into every part of our community. Just as we nurture curiosity and creativity in our students, we also invest deeply in the growth of our teachers. One way this commitment comes to life is through our teacher mentoring program, which pairs educators with faculty members to foster collaboration, confidence, and professional fulfillment.
