Forecasting Learning: How a New Weather Station Strengthens Science

The Willows community is seeing science come to life, quite literally in the air around us. Thanks to funds raised during last year’s Jog-a-Thon, we have purchased a professional-grade weather station, the Davis Vantage Pro 2. This new device is more than just an exciting gadget, but a learning tool that constantly updates and deepens our integrated science curriculum, empowering students to explore our environment and climate through real data, observation, and discovery.

The weather station continuously measures temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind speed, and barometric pressure, sending data to a constantly-updating device that is available to view at the entrance to the school. For our students, it means the opportunity to work with authentic, high-quality tools and to connect classroom learning directly to the dynamic environment they experience every day.

Science That’s Real and Relevant

At The Willows, science is woven throughout our curriculum in meaningful, hands-on ways. The weather station enriches this integrated approach by connecting scientific concepts to math, technology, environmental studies, and even social studies. These interdisciplinary connections nurture curiosity, critical thinking, and collaboration, emphasizing the hallmarks of The Willows’ approach to learning.

Professional Tools, Professional Thinking

Giving students access to professional-level scientific instruments helps them develop the habits of mind that scientists use in their work. These tools invite students to ask more sophisticated questions, test their ideas with precision, and interpret data with greater nuance. They learn that science isn’t about finding one right answer, but building understanding through careful observation, evidence, and reflection.

By incorporating tools like the weather station, The Willows models authentic scientific workflows, helping students experience what it’s like to engage in inquiry the way professionals do. This exposure is especially powerful at a young age, fostering confidence, a sense of ownership over learning, and an appreciation for the rigor and creativity that science demands.

The Power of Community Support

Opportunities like these stems from the collective effort of The Willows community. Our biennial Jog-a-Thon brings students, families, and teachers together for a day of fun and fitness. The funds raised by our community directly translate into resources and experiences, sparking innovation into our classrooms that enrich every child’s education.

This year’s weather station is a perfect example of how fundraising makes a tangible difference. It’s a gift that keeps on giving, as students will use it year after year, across disciplines, in lessons that grow and evolve along with our curriculum. It’s also a reminder that when families, faculty, and students come together to support The Willows, they are investing not just in tools, but in creativity, connections, and community.

Looking Ahead

The addition of the new weather station marks another exciting step forward in The Willows’ commitment to experiential, inquiry-based learning. As our students begin to track the changing seasons, analyze patterns, and connect local weather to global systems, they’re discovering their own ability to question, investigate, and understand the world around them.

Scientific literacy and environmental awareness are important tools to help ensure that The Willows continues to nurture thoughtful, informed, and engaged learners. Thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of our community, the forecast for science education at The Willows looks bright.

Struggle: Helping Children Grow Through Challenge

The Willows school-wide theme for the 2025-2026 school year is Struggle. Each day, we challenge students to uncover meaning and significance in the world around them and emphasize independence and courage in risk-taking. One of the most powerful ways children develop these skills is through something many of us instinctively want to protect them from: struggle.
