Back to School Confidence: 6 Tips for Children Beginning a New School Year

The start of a new school year is filled with excitement and possibility, but also a few nerves concerning unexpected parts of school. For children, the new year can bring new teachers, classmates, routines, and opportunities to grow. For parents, it can bring both pride and concern—excitement about your child reaching new milestones, while also wanting them to feel confident, supported, and ready for what lies ahead.

Transitional moments like these are important in a child’s development. By taking a moment to emphasize preparation, encouragement, and support, families can help set the tone for a positive and successful year. Follow these 6 tips to help set your children up for success for their new school year!

Establish Routines Early

Children thrive on consistency, at school and at home. In the weeks leading up to the first day of school, begin easing into school-year routines—bedtimes, wake-up times, and morning/nighttime rituals. Predictability creates a sense of security, making the transition from summer to school smoother for both children and parents.

Create a Positive Mindset

Talk with your child about how they are feeling about the year ahead. Emphasize the exciting parts of a new beginning: meeting friends, learning new subject matters, and discovering interests. A positive outlook helps children approach change with confidence instead of concern.

Normalize Nervous Feelings

It’s natural for children to feel anxious about the unknown. Reassure them that those emotions are normal, and that adults often feel the same when starting something new. It can be beneficial to even share a personal anecdote about a time you felt uncertain or anxious and how you managed those feelings. It’s crucial for children to know they are not alone, as it can make them feel reassured and more prepared for what lies ahead.

Encourage Independence

Back-to-school is a great time to help children build self-reliance. Younger children can practice packing their backpacks or choosing an outfit the night before. Older students can take responsibility for tracking assignments, choosing electives or extracurriculars, and by practicing time management. These small acts of independence strengthen confidence and help children feel capable of achieving even greater goals.

Foster Connection

Friendships are at the heart of a positive school experience. Encourage your child to be open to new classmates while also maintaining old friendships. Simple acts like introducing themselves, joining a new game at recess, or inviting a peer into a conversation or lunch table can go a long way in helping them feel connected.

Keep Communication Open

Let your child know they can talk to you about their experiences— not only the highs, but also the lows. Listen attentively, validate their feelings, and celebrate small successes along the way. Knowing they have your support helps them feel safe and confident as they navigate new challenges.
