7 Things You Might Not Know About The Willows Lower School

The Willows is committed to a balanced yet demanding progressive curriculum rooted in experiential learning and social values. Our Lower School program fosters a rich, supportive environment that allows children to grow cognitively, socially, emotionally, and physically. Here are seven unique aspects of The Willows’ Lower School program.

Hands-on Learning Across Grades
Experiential learning is a cornerstone of The Willows' approach. In DK-2, students engage in hands-on activities designed to promote the love of learning and bring curriculum to life. From designing dream homes in Kindergarten, to creating and studying eco-columns in 5th grade, these activities encourage problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration, making learning an exciting and immersive process. Looping Relationships for Growth
Teachers and students loop together for first and second grades and again for third and fourth grades. A benefit of looping equips teachers with continuity and a thorough understanding of the group’s social dynamics and their students’ learning styles. This deep connection enhances not only academic development but also social-emotional well-being, giving students a solid foundation for long-term success. Learn more about Looping here.

Co-Teaching for Deeper Engagement
The Willows employs a co-teaching model where teachers work in tandem and at times a trio to offer diverse perspectives and expertise. This dynamic approach enriches the classroom experience, enabling students to explore subjects from multiple angles, offering more individual attention to students, and fostering collaboration among teachers. Learn more about the benefits of Co-Teaching here.

Integrated Technology Tools
Starting in Developmental Kindergarten, students benefit from a 1:1 device program, learning to use technology purposefully and responsibly. By the time they reach upper elementary grades, they are adept at integrating tech into research, projects, and presentations, preparing them for a digital world. Learn more about our commitment to developing technological literacy here.

Community and Leadership Roles
Interaction across grades fosters a strong sense of community, with older students mentoring younger ones. In 3rd-5th grades, leadership opportunities abound, whether through group projects, school-wide events, or our 5th grade Book Buddy Program. Interacting with students both older and younger helps build confidence and empathy. Learn more about The Willows Book Buddy Program here.

Connection to Nature
The organic garden program introduces students to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. Through hands-on gardening, they develop curiosity about the natural world, learn responsibility, and explore the science behind growth and ecosystems. This feature of our curriculum is reinforced in the classroom, with students learning about the science behind gardening as early as Kindergarten. Learn more about our gardening and composting program here.

Field Trips and Overnight Trips
Moving outside campus offers an alternate, real-world perspective that brings curriculum to vivid life. Field trips and overnight trips become more than just a day or week-long outing away from traditional classroom activities, providing a unique setting to expand critical thinking. Our 5th grade students are immersed in American history studies throughout the school year and their school trip to Boston offers them a look into the past as they visit historical landmarks and walk the Freedom Trail. Forecasting Learning: How a New Weather Station Strengthens Science

The Willows community is seeing science come to life, quite literally in the air around us. Thanks to funds raised during last year’s Jog-a-Thon, we have purchased a professional-grade weather station, the Davis Vantage Pro 2. This new device is more than just an exciting gadget, but a learning tool that constantly updates and deepens our integrated science curriculum, empowering students to explore our environment and climate through real data, observation, and discovery.

Celebrating 10 Years of RULER at The Willows

For the past decade, The Willows’ implementation of the RULER Approach has not only transformed how our students learn, but how our entire community understands, expresses, and values emotions. We recognize that emotions matter, and that healthy emotional regulation plays a vital piece in helping to cultivate children’s minds.

Struggle: Helping Children Grow Through Challenge

The Willows school-wide theme for the 2025-2026 school year is Struggle. Each day, we challenge students to uncover meaning and significance in the world around them and emphasize independence and courage in risk-taking. One of the most powerful ways children develop these skills is through something many of us instinctively want to protect them from: struggle.
