7 Things that Might Surprise you about Athletics at The Willows

7 Things that Might Surprise you about Athletics at The Willows

Founded in 1994, The Willows interscholastic athletic program is strong and thriving. Our goal is to promote cooperation, team spirit, fun, and good sportsmanship. Here are seven things that might surprise you about the program:

1. Participation is the Name of the Game

82% of Middle School students participate in a team sport and 90% for fourth and fifth graders. Whether it’s basketball, soccer, golf, or any of the other nine sports we offer, students develop their individual skillset as well as experience how to work effectively as a team. Some students learn a new sport altogether.

2. There’s Room for Everyone

The Willows offers both A and B teams in most team sports, whether it be for Middle School or Lower School students. However, both teams practice together, learn from the same coaches, and compete in the same conference. This allows students to participate more, develop skills, and enjoy the team experience at their own pace.

3. No Matter the Season, There’s Always a Game Soon!

With nine different sports, 28 teams, and over 100 games in the busiest season (not including playoffs!), the athletic program is a year-round affair. Come out to a game and you’ll see fellow students, parents, and teachers cheering on our student athletes.

4. It’s a No-Cut Zone

The Willows has a “no-cut” policy, meaning every student who wants to join a team is welcomed. This inclusive approach encourages students to explore and participate in a new sport. It also stresses the importance of teamwork, showing how everyone on a team brings unique strengths to the group.

5. Everyone Plays

The Willows embraces an “everyone plays” mindset—every team member has the opportunity to contribute during games, fostering a sense of unity, support, and connection. In Lower School sports, each student participates with equal playing time, promoting team spirit and good sportsmanship. In Middle School, athletics become more competitive. While the amount of playing time for each team member is not equal, we continue our “everyone plays” philosophy, making sure each team member plays in every game.

6. We Play to Have Fun - and Compete!

While we emphasize the importance of participation, learning, team building, and having fun, we also work hard to compete! While winning is not the primary goal of our athletics program, The Willows have won numerous league championships. Just this past year, our Middle School Basketball and Football teams won championships and our other teams made successful runs in the playoffs. Throughout our history, The Willows have won over 20 championships in the Pacific Basin League.

7. Learning continues in Athletics

The benefits from participating in a sport impact each student far beyond the playing field. It teaches students how to work towards a common goal and help create well-rounded, confident, and compassionate individuals. These characteristics are essential for success in and out of the classroom.

Forecasting Learning: How a New Weather Station Strengthens Science

The Willows community is seeing science come to life, quite literally in the air around us. Thanks to funds raised during last year’s Jog-a-Thon, we have purchased a professional-grade weather station, the Davis Vantage Pro 2. This new device is more than just an exciting gadget, but a learning tool that constantly updates and deepens our integrated science curriculum, empowering students to explore our environment and climate through real data, observation, and discovery.

Celebrating 10 Years of RULER at The Willows

For the past decade, The Willows’ implementation of the RULER Approach has not only transformed how our students learn, but how our entire community understands, expresses, and values emotions. We recognize that emotions matter, and that healthy emotional regulation plays a vital piece in helping to cultivate children’s minds.

Struggle: Helping Children Grow Through Challenge

The Willows school-wide theme for the 2025-2026 school year is Struggle. Each day, we challenge students to uncover meaning and significance in the world around them and emphasize independence and courage in risk-taking. One of the most powerful ways children develop these skills is through something many of us instinctively want to protect them from: struggle.
