DK - Penguin Tobogganing
DK students explore the world of penguins with the help of their 8th-grade buddies in a fun, hands-on way. After learning about penguins' habitats and behaviors, the DK students take turns tobogganing across the yard on longboards, mimicking the movement of penguins. Some buddies even flip roles, with DK students leading the way!
K - Dream Houses
Kindergarteners design and build their dream houses as part of a project that combines creativity with lessons on shapes and structures. Using a variety of materials, they bring their imaginative ideas to life, showcasing their understanding of basic home and architectural concepts. Each house is as unique as the student who creates it!
1st - Ant Tunnels
First graders transform into worker ants, donning antenna headbands and building intricate colonies. They work together to create specific chambers for food storage, eggs, and the queen ant, mirroring the structure of a real ant colony. The activity highlights teamwork and gives students a hands-on connection to their science lessons.
2nd – Eminent People
Second graders step into the shoes of historical figures during their winter exhibition, presenting mock press conferences as their chosen eminent individuals. After researching their subjects, from Nikola Tesla to Marian Anderson, they dress the part and answer questions from classmates and families. The project showcases their research, public speaking, and critical thinking skills.
3rd - LA Neighborhood Project
Third graders dive into the diversity of Los Angeles by creating a detailed LA Neighborhood Project. They study various neighborhoods, learning about their unique cultures, landmarks, and histories, and then craft presentations that highlight their findings. This project emphasizes research and celebrates the vibrant community around them.
4th - Sports Start
Fourth graders take their first steps into athletics by joining the school's after-school sports teams. They are encouraged to participate in flag football, soccer, basketball, and more, emphasizing fun, teamwork, and the fundamentals of each sport. The "everyone plays" philosophy ensures all students have the chance to shine and develop their skills.
5th - Boston Overnight Trip
Each year, Willows fifth graders take their first cross-country overnight field trip to Boston, continuing their curriculum that focuses on the colonial states and revolutionary period. Additionally, this trip offers students the opportunity learn about the city itself, whether it be visiting the Institute of Contemporary Art or walking along the Freedom Trail.
6th - Forensics Mock Trial
Sixth graders wrap up their forensics unit by participating in a mock trial, taking on roles such as lawyers, witnesses, and expert analysts. Guided by evidence from a mock crime scene, they demonstrate their critical thinking and presentation skills in front of 8th-grade and Faculty/Staff jurors. The trial serves as a dynamic and engaging culmination of their scientific and legal studies.
7th - Civil Rights Trip
Seventh graders embark on a meaningful journey to Atlanta, Selma, and Montgomery to explore the history of the Civil Rights Movement. Visiting landmarks like the Edmund Pettus Bridge and Ebenezer Baptist Church, they connect deeply with the stories of courage and change. The trip brings history to life and inspires powerful discussions about justice and equality.
