As part of their Home Unit, kindergarten students have been building structures using different materials such as legos, magnatiles, and adobe bricks that they made themselves. Using natural materials, classes mixed dirt, straw, and water to create bricks. Then students watched as the adobe creations hardened after a week in the sun. Students also have learned about skyscrapers and discussed the construction of tall buildings and how they stand tall. The study of buildings culminates in a class collaborative project to paint a skyscraper mural.
All these moments, especially the adobe brick project, lead up to a kindergarten field trip to the oldest house in Los Angeles, Olivera Street, and downtown Los Angeles.
