    Dena Simmons, Ed.D., Leveraging emotional intelligence and culturally responsive practices

    Dena Simmons, Ed.D., a lifelong activist, and educator, is the Assistant Director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. The presentor of two TEDx Talks and a TED Talk on Broadway, discusses how the intersection of emotionally intelligent and culturally responsive practices can create equitable and welcoming communities, where students can learn in the comfort of their skin.

    Dr. Simmons believes that creating a safe environment for children is an essential component of education and in her talk discusses, through narrative, how the intersection of emotionally intelligent and culturally responsive practices can create equitable and welcoming communities, where students can learn in the comfort of their skin. During this interactive session, participants will explore impostor syndrome, the five key skills of emotional intelligence—recognizing, understanding, labeling, expressing, and regulating emotions—and culturally relevant practices.

    Objectives:
    • Compare and contrast equity and equality
    • Explore impostor syndrome
    • Discuss the skills of emotional intelligence
    • Define what cultural responsive practice is
    • Explore the intersections between culturally responsive practices and emotional intelligence
    • Describe ways to incorporate culturally responsive and emotionally intelligent practices into participants’ lives and work
