Our 2019-2020 Schoolwide theme, “The Ties that Bind Us,” has been integrated meaningfully into our academic and social emotional curriculum throughout the year and now resonates more than ever during the COVID-19 pandemic. To support our Willows and Los Angeles communities during these unprecedented times, an activity entitled Tied to Our Communityis offering our students the optional opportunity to creatively express gratitude to the essential employees who have been tirelessly working to keep us safe and united. Students were asked to select an essential worker or workers, think of a way to show their gratitude and support.
Students identified numerous essential workers such as healthcare and public health staffs, law enforcement, public safety, USPS and package delivery services, food service, transportations services, and more. Then, they shared ways that they could support and express gratitude such as writing thank you letters, making signs, making masks, buying flowers, and baking treats.
Examples of this service and gratitude-based endeavors include 5th grader Eliza’s sidewalk chalk thank you to USPS and package delivery personnel, and 4th grader Jesse’s design and a donation he made to International Rescue Committee using the proceeds from his artwork.
