Poetry Behind The Scenes with Willows Poet-in-Residence Deb Studebaker
Our Poet-in-Residence Deb Studebaker has been working with students in DK through 8th grade brainstorming, writing, and revising original poetry, and collaborating with classroom teachers and specialists integrating music, art, and classroom curriculum with the poetry. Our students are immersed in poetry–reading, writing, illustrating, and listening to poetry–and are ready to perform and share their creations with our community at The Willows Poetry Night on February 19. Poetry Night is a very special Willows evening of creativity and community.
"Writing is an essential tool for our students and poetry is a key component of our language arts curriculum," emphasizes Lisa Rosenstein, Head of School. "Poetry Night accomplishes three of our goals: teaching writing structure and skills, instilling confidence and giving our students a performance opportunity in front of both a large and small group, and helping our students realize the importance and value of their own voice. As a community we celebrate them and their accomplishments, as well as the joy of poetry and learning."
Leading up to Poetry Night, we will be producing a four-part series on The Willows Blog called Poetry Behind The Sceneswritten by Poet-In-Residence Deb Studebaker. This series provides a glimpse into the creative process of writing and performing poetry and illustrates how poetry is integrated into our curricula from DK-8th grade.
