Service learning integrates community service projects with academic study to connect classroom learning with the real world. It strengthens our community and teaches civic responsibility. We guide our students out of the classroom and into the community into experiences that will give them a better understanding of the issues and challenges that all communities face. We help them to identify problems and design solutions. At the core of service learning is the intent that both providers of the service and the recipients find the experience beneficial and sometimes even transforming.

The word “community” is an intentional and integral part of our name. Throughout the year we seek out opportunities to reach out to our neighbors to walk the walk with our students and demonstrate in a meaningful way the importance of getting involved.

The Willows maintains close ties with its neighbors reaching out regularly to support local businesses. We make our facilities, such as our gymnasium, theater, and campus, available to the outside community whenever possible.

Our weekly parent e-newsletter contains a Community Section to apprise our families of special attractions in Culver City and Los Angeles.

A few examples of our community involvement and partnerships include initiatives with Los Angeles City Events and environmental projects, The Young Storytellers Foundation, the Culver City Chamber of Commerce, Culver City Educational Foundation, Culver City Middle School Backpacks for Kids, and Visual Arts Workshops open to Culver City and Los Angeles teachers. Our ideas@thewillows Speaker Series, featuring Parenting and Ecducational Spekaers, films, and workshops, is open to all of Los Angeles in celebration of life-long learning.

The Willows Service Learning Program is designed to provide age-appropriate community service opportunities that will enrich learning, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen community ties. In all grades, community service is an integral part of the educational program. Students are involved in service projects that promote an awareness of the needs of others and relate to their curriculum. We participate in a wide range of school-wide projects including:
